The Chillagoe landscape began to form years ago, when the area was covered by a shallow sea. Today that limestone towers over the surrounding plains as outcrops while underground, caves and caverns created by dissolving of the limestone are decorated by stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones. These images are works of art and make spectacular viewing. Chillagoe two and a half hours west of Cairns is well worth the visit.
After visiting Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains, Cammoo and Olsen Caves near Rockhampton and Chillagoe Caves we are hooked.
